Description
I am seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join a research project exploring the associations between cardiovascular and brain health from childhood to early adulthood. The study utilises unique longitudinal data and examines lifestyle factors (physical activity, nutrition, sleep, tobacco use) and health indicators in relation to brain health (cognitive functions, academic performance, brain structures and functions).
The doctoral thesis will be completed within the Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences or Clinical Research at the University of Eastern Finland. The position will start on January 1, 2026, or as agreed, and funding covers three years of full-time work through a grant provided by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation.

Position and Research Environment
As a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Eastern Finland, you will work as part of my research group, which currently includes seven PhD candidates at different stages of their studies and one postdoctoral researcher. You will also be part of the broader Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children -study research team. As a doctoral researcher, your tasks will include completing the scientific publications, coursework, and dissertation required for the doctoral degree. We offer:

Requirements
- A Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., health sciences, exercise science, biomedicine, nutrition, psychology)
- Strong written and spoken English skills
- Willingness to apply for doctoral study rights at the University of Eastern Finland during spring 2026
- Basic knowledge of statistical methods (e.g., regression models, longitudinal analyses) and motivation to develop methodological skills (R, SPSS or similar)
- Good collaboration skills and ability to work independently
Additional assets:
- Experience in research related to children’s or adolescents’ health, neuroscience, or epidemiology
- Positive and active attitude towards science communication
Funding
